Do these work on that kind of situation or should I just take them to our vet?** A: These clippers are the same they use at the groomers. If your dogs nails are growing into the skin, then they are way overdue for a trimming. At this time- I would let the groomer do it. But in the future, just keep trimming those nails. There is a guard on these clippers which prevents overturning. Or you can have a jack Russell like me that takes 3 to hold him down Not because it hurts- but because he's hyper! SCARED** A: The quick safety guard sits flush against the back of the clippers and when used in place the clippers will only allow you to cut a maximum of 3mm off the nail. There are many dogs that don't like sitting still for their pedicures, we have found that if you place them on a table with a leash and maintain some pressure on the leash they are a little less squirmy. You can always try to bribe them with a treat as well so that they are focused on something else instead of the nail clipping. Dogs with black nails are undoubtedly tougher to cut as you can not easily see the quick, there are a couple of tricks that may help.Look at the underside of the nail and will see that towards the tip the nail separates into a triangular shape with two outer walls, typically that is where there is no quick and is ok to cut.Or another trick is if you drew an imaginary line across the pad of their paw and extend that line across the nail, line up your cut along that imaginary line instead of making the traditional 45 degree cut across the tip of the nail.Lastly, we always recommend that you make shallow cuts with dark nails, and use the included nail file to try and get them shorter to prevent hurting your dog. The nails do not cut cleanly, they leave a jagged edge. I bought these for a crisp cut.** A: Did you purchase the small version or the larger one? I got the larger one myself and haven't had any issues with jagged edges. If you're cutting the nails on a 45-degree angle like the instructions say, and you're still getting a jagged edge, I'd suggest returning them and getting another pair sent out to you. No cut from any clippers will ever be 100% crisp, but when used properly, they should never leave a jagged edge; otherwise the clippers themselves are defective. **Q: Is this safe to use for cats?** A: Yes. I tried these clippers as another basset owner said they worked for them.
