The pen lids are solid, and are of a different softer plastic than the barrel, so they won't crack like some do. The pen lids also go down to almost a third of the way on the pen, which means they stay on, and there is a handy clip on them so they can be placed in pockets and sides of bags. The barrel is a firmer plastic and is hexagonal, so that you can maintain a firm grip.
