The traps come folded with the adhesive side stuck to itself. It takes a lot of patience to pull it apart. I just noticed the instructions suggest that heating the trap with a blow dryer first makes it easier to pull apart. I tape the trap to the floor with packing tape. I lay it across my kitchen doorway. The trap is longer than the doorway so I tape it up the wall on each side. I make sure everything is flush to the floor and the wall. This way, the intruder cannot run under the trap. It cannot get by without getting stuck. The drawback with this method is that you have to step over the trap as you come and go. It's worth it to me though. You get used to it quickly. I replace the trap with a new one immediately after catching an intruder.
