Marina back in top form & a contender for the album of 2015
Marina's 3rd album successfully combines pop, indie, disco, electronica & rock. It's a neat 12 track affair with no duds and opens with 'Happy' which is a reflective sad number (contradicts the title) & even if not exceptional makes for an interesting moment. 'Froot' is a catchy 80s disco affair with the vocals & lyrics "don't you give me a reason that it is not". What lifts the album though is 3rd track 'I'm A Ruin' which is different again & reminds of Haley Mary & The Jezabels "yeah yeah...ah hah" sounding quite beautiful telling us about Marina's recent split & complications of love. 'Blue' & 'Forget' are each similar & in their own ways melodic & chirpy with both being possible singles "yeah I've been dancing with the devil". 'Gold' a gentle little rocking ballad...one of the best & for a moment the fave "don't think I see what I used to see"...another potential single. 'Can't Pin Me Down' keeps the high going & combats the mentality of pigeonholing (branding) everything. 'Solitaire' is gentle almost chill though one of the weaker ones. 'Better Than That' "like all the boys before" is a biting ode to female rivalry & another possible single. 'Weeds' likens an ex-lover to a weed she thought she’d cut off "at the root" & is more excellence. 'Savages' sees Marina's frustration with humanity "we are all just savages" and is perhaps the top track here. 'Immortal' "I don't want to be afraid, afraid to die" is gentle but makes for a slightly flat ending. Even if diverse & cohesive, there is a slight sameness, but generally each track rolls out in excellent fashion. The lyrics are strong & clearly sung (her lyrical prowess first evident on 'I Am Not A Robot'). In summary, coupled with a great cover artwork & lovely white vinyl, this has Marina back in top form & a contender for the album of 2015.

Diamonds are forever
The first 5 songs are perfect pop delivered with a sultry and seductive voice and harmonies that come from another place. Then all of a sudden Froot makes a turn towards an unexpected, experimental and eventually darker realm which could impair its viability as a smash hit record. It is not commercial or fashionable pop, it therefore might not appeal to the large demographic her record company is aiming at right now. However it will certainly find its place in the pantheon of excellent recordings for years to come. It's that good.No fillers or weak points in this record, perhaps the lack of a chorus on "Gold" makes it a little less spectacular to my untrained ear compared to the rest of her material; on the other hand it serves the purpose of a nice interlude for the remaining material that flows with cohesive perfection.5 out of 5 simply because it sounds unlike anything currently in the charts and probably will be for a while. With Froot Marina sheds away the skin of the aspiring pop star and assumes the one of a true artist. Bravo!

Both a return to form and a real step up
Having been a fan of Marina since before her debut release, I was one of the fans who was slightly disappointed with Electra Heart. I felt that a lot of Marina's uniqueness had been watered down and diluted for a mass audience, and although I was pleased to see the success that the album earnt an artist who I felt had been overlooked previously, I wished it had come with a more honest album.Froot is a real return to what made Marina and the Diamonds stand out for me all the way back in 2009, with a very welcome addition of experience. Some of the same lyrical themes are explored as before - personal failings, self deprecation, vanity and envy - but it's clear on this album that Marina's lyrical ability has grown. I always felt as though her lyrics were her biggest weakness, playing second fiddle to the melodies, but I'm pleased to have had my qualms proven wrong on this album.Better Than That, Savages and Weeds are personal favourites, but honestly there's no real weak track on this album for me.

Solid album with some exceptional tracks
A very solid album with some truly excellent tracks (FROOT, Blue, Better Than That, Immortal, and my personal favourite, Savages) from Welsh talent Marina and the Diamonds. If you've not heard of her before, Id recommend you start at the beginning, The Family Jewels, and work your way up to this album. I recently saw her in concert and she only proves just how incredible a performer, singer and songwriter she is.

Marina doing what she does best!
"Froot" is a colourful cocktail of Marina's classic "happy / sad" vibe, which was so present in "Family Jewels" but which unfortunately wavered a little in "Electra Heart". In this album she's back to being her wonderful, imaginative and wacky self! She has definitely gone darker, but their are still a bunch of tracks that will get you flailing about in a wafty pop-hippy way and singing along. A good collection of songs, perhaps not quite as fresh and out their as "Family Jewels" but it's still up their with my top favourite albums.

More than Happy
The first time I listened to Froot I thought WTH is Marina up to this time? Then I remembered having a similar initial reaction to Electra Heart, and relaxed a little.Whatever my initial reaction, if her CDs were vinyl then my Marina collection would all be completely smooth-grooved by now from the number of plays – including Froot I’m happy to say.Froot (as usual) is quite different from the previous EH album. I admire Marina for clearly following her heart with this album. Personally, I’ve loved everything she’s ever done from MvS & GMTM days and all the demos/covers available via a well-known video site through to the three commercially released albums.I don’t believe Marina is a ‘Marmite’ artist, but I believe you only get the real pay-back if you put some time and effort into listening to her. And it’s quite some payback!
