I mix a tablespoon of the powder with a tablespoon of rosewater (regular water works as well), and apply it to my scalp in the shower. I use it on my hair when it's wet. It does not make suds, and took some getting used to-for working the paste all over the scalp to clean the roots of my hair. The purpose of this is to clean, which it does very well. I'm hoping that by using this product I am stopping the damage that harsh, sudsy shampoos cause.
