As DawnFitchMitch accurately stated, it is real, dyed, dried moss that needs to maintenance. Just keep it out of direct sunlight and the color will maintain beautifully. Hope this helps! **Q: Can I water the plant with the moss on top of the plant, or do I need to remove the moss from the plant before watering?** A: I am not 100% sure, since mine is in a container with a crystal that cannot get wet. But I would assume the coloring would wash out and possibly stain or hurt the plant. When I put my terrarium together my hands were dyed lime green from the coloring on the moss. Hope this helps. **Q: So is it still alive ?** A: No. It is dried and preserved to it can not grow and does not require water or anything.
