**Q: does it have to be a freshly cut log?  I have a few logs that were cut 6-8 months ago**
A: Yes it has to be a freshly cut log otherwise something else could've moved in

**Q: Can you do this in a live tree?**
A: YOu need to cut a freshly living tree but the tree should not still be living as its natural immune defence will try to kill the oyster mycelium.

**Q: Would these work in a coffee grounds system instead of a log?**
A: They are mushroom spores stuck to a wooden dowel.  I can't speak to a coffee substrate specifically but I don't see why these wouldn't work in any acceptable substrate including a sawdust pack.  Logs just offer a larger food source and will result in a larger and longer supply of mushrooms for several years while a less dense substrate would work but offer a lower harvest.
