The device needed to find a open, or deenergized circuit will have a tone generator built in, these are more commonly called wire tracers.They are a little more expensive but well worth the cost. **Q: I have outlets wired in series: some NM. some metal-shielded. Can I detect signal in accessible wires "halfway" to the breaker to confirm route??** A: You should be able to trace wiring that is not in a shielded metal conduit. I submit however, that your outlets are not wired in series, they are in parallel and perhaps daisy chained, but they will not be in series, nothing will work if they are. Remember the old Christmas tree lights that if one was bad or missing they all went out? That was series wiring. **Q: Can this trace a wire routing through the wall.** A: In answer to the question, the CB10 can not be used to trace a wire behind walls.
