First, I was surprised to discover that this dry item actually does produce moist heat, without my having to add any moisture.Then, I was pleasantly surprised at how refreshed my eyes feel after using it.What I've read about warm compresses and dry eyes is that the warmth thins the natural oil in the glands that feed lubricating oils into your tears. These oils help your tears to evaporate more slowly, and make the tears more effective at soothing your eye's surface. They contribute to the health of your cornea, as well as to your comfort. People who have dry eyes often have inflammation of tear glands, oil glands, or both.What I've found in personal use is that while I can't tell precisely how it's working, I feel much better after I've used my Thermalon moist heat mask. Because the heat is moist, it not only eases the "congestion" in my eyes, but it also comforts the dryness. It's very relaxing to use; it almost feels decadent.One criticism I've seen several users mention is that it doesn't have a slip cover, so it gets dirty and needs washed, requiring a long drying time. While it would be nice if they made one that snaps on or something, one simple solution is to cut the ends off a large sock (I used a boot sock) and slip it over. The sleeve off of an old shirt might work, too. I don't sew at all, and it only took me about 30 seconds to "make" a slip cover for my mask.I have Sjogrens, and have been looking for affordable solutions to my dry eye problems. I have bought some of the gel-bead masks, and no matter what microwave I put them in, I end up with a half-full mask and a bunch of liquified beads - even when following directions and microwaving for less time than the max. I saw this and figured "what the hell, it can't be any worse." The moist heat, especially in the eye mask, is WONDERFUL. I find that this retains the heat as well as any of the other eye masks that I have purchased. While some reviewers have remarked that it's heavy or the beads all slide down to the bottom, I have found that if you lay back (Like laying your back on the couch, or in bed) then the weight of the beads actually feels nice. If you try and wear this sitting up, of course all the beads are going to settle at the bottom. But for me, considering I can't see while wearing it anyway, I take the opportunity to lay back and relax (or in the case of a headache, lay back and wait for it to please, dear god, be over). I just lay back, adjust the beads so they are evenly distributed, and wait. This thing has been a life saver since I got it - I almost missed Christmas because of a migraine!Since my purchase, I bought my mom one, I have just recently ordered the sleeve for some joint pain in my hand (and one for my boyfriend's arthritis), and one for those pesky menstrual cramps. I'm a huge fan of these products.While I understand some people would have preferred these come with an elastic strap, rather than a ribbon, I think the ribbon was the right choice. As a woman with long hair, I've had hairs ripped out, and expensive pillowcases destroyed by elastic straps on sleep masks, and eventually, the elastic wears out, meaning you have to move it tighter, exposing more elastic, and damaging more stuff....
