Definitely! For Jane Austen lovers, by Jane Austen lovers

*by W***E on Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2020*

This book is presented with the love and care that I've noticed come only from those adapters who are fans as well. You feel for Darcy at his 1st proposal; this shy, reserved guy has obviously geared himself up to pop the question that will make him the happiest man in the world, and every time he thinks it can't get worse, it does.Elizabeth's emotions flux back and forth after Mrs Gardiner's letter, and no matter the anguish, she bravely decides on the more realistic hypothesis that explains Darcy's behaviour. It certainly doesn't stop her matching Lady Catherine shot for shot. The 2nd proposal scene is so precious. This adaption isn't for the serious scholar who wants an exact match to the original, scene for scene, word for word. While being true to story, plot and characters, the adaptors, being fans, have added their own touches. We are shown Darcy's viewpoint of the Meryton assembly, and he's very much aware that Elizabeth overheard *that* comment.Scattered throughout are 4-panel mini comics that neither add nor detract from the action, but do explain why the second most beautiful girl in the country is without a dance partner at Meryton, or what Mr Bennet's life would be like with a sensible wife. And it's clear they had great fun with Mrs Bennet.Oh, and while Darcy doesn't dive into any ponds, there is a Wet Shirt Incident. So maybe/maybe not for the serious scholar who needs it for an essay or credit marks - but for the dedicated fan to the newcomer who's heard of this Jane Austen and wants to know what all the fuss is about? Definitely!

Really Overly Emotional and Slight Divergence from Plot

*by P***E on Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2014*

I have been waiting for a manga version of my favorite book and finally, it has arrived. First, I like to say that I love the drawings. The artwork is beautiful and so wonderfully detailed. The drawings are very bold and flowy. However, the style is more Korean than Japanese though. The panels are easy to follow and the words were easy to read. Despite the thickness of the manga, I breezed through it. Also, I bought the hardcover edition and it was worth the extra money. The quality is there in the cover. The pages are your standard manga quality. Now, my main issue would be that parts of the story, the dialogue and characterizations diverged from the original novel. As someone who seen the movies hundreds of time and read the novel dozens of times, the interpretation didn't stay true. The scenes and dialogue changes felt off. I mean, why would you change anything when the original works? For example, Mr. Hurst got amazingly good-looking for some odd reason. O_o And Darcy. Where do I start? Darcy seems overly dramatic for such a stoic man. It was a little hard to wrap my head around that he was so emotional. He blushed way more than Lizzie. Lizzie was also a bit dramatic but I was okay with it. Other than that, the other characters played their parts well and the story does end up the way it should but with more flair. Off topic, Collins' design here was so goofy. Love it.So, if you are a Pride & Prejudice purist, do not get this book. You will be vastly disappointed. However, if you don't mind a variation, give it a shot. And if you have never read the original version, go for it if you love a romantic manga. It was an interesting rewrite with gorgeous drawings to go with it. I was little disappointed it wasn't exact, but I'm happy to have this manga in any case. You can never have enough Pride & Prejudice.

Manga/Graphic novel fans will adore this version of Jane Austen's classic plot

*by S***E on Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2019*

Frankly, I wasn't sure what to expect -- there have been many attempts at turning literary classics into graphic novel form but only a few successes. I loved this version and was charmed that Austen's plot fits Manga conventions so well. Some literary quality is lost (19th century literary works tend to be as much about language as about plot, and an excellent way to approach a such book would be to read it out loud) but the story twists and plot turns excellently serve the expectations of Manga -dare I say- literary convention. In fact this somewhat overly serious work of literature, from a twenty-first century point of view, is rendered with a touch of visual humor, releasing the story and plot from the past, dragging it into the present and perhaps pushing it into the future. Again, though I understand why some Austen fans disliked this treatment I also understand why other literature majors, as well as Manga fans, loved it.
