Look up Karen Pryor's books on clicker training, you would teach your dog to touch the end of the stick to get a click/treat. Then you can use the stick as a target for him and he will want to walk and touch the end of the stick to get a click and a treat. That's training the dog. If you don't want to work on the training, you could easily put some peanut butter on the end of a wooden spoon to get the results you are asking about.
