Since this is made of mostly medal they can't chew on it and the tension rode hold up a lot better than the wooden ones specially a dog just pushes it. Pretty much really good gate instead of those wooden gates that my kids broke trying to go over, now we don't need to worry about going over because of the gate swings open. Can it be easily taken down & put back up?** A: Yes, it's easy, but we used the wall anchors for more stability (our dogs are large and enthusiastic) and we find it's easier to just leave them up all the time. They're reasonably attractive and the gates are easy to operate, plus this allows us to quickly and easily kick the dogs out of the kitchen if they're being pests! **Q: Can the "cat door" be taken off or propped open somehow? I have a blind kitty and want to keep the small door open permanently.** A: YES!! Yes you can! You will need a couple of small needle nose pliers to do it, as the pin holding it in is spring loaded. Have the gate upright, open the small door completely (open it away from you) to expose the pin, pinch and pull down using the pliers. The pin is rather long so you will need both pliers in order to compress the spring loaded pin enough to remove the door. I had the door propped open for a couple of months, and cannot tell you the number of times I whacked my shin on it. The pet gate is big enough for a 15" sheltie to go through, which is bigger than we had wanted. However, the fence comes with an extension that I was able to fasten to the main fence with cable ties and so reduce the size of the pet opening. The cat gets thru but not the sheltie. The people gate would need to be navigated sideways if you have big hips. The attachment to the door frame is solid: adjustable plastic-tipped rods screw out sideways and engage plastic cups that prevent the fence from being pushed out of the doorway. If you use the cups you will have to screw them into the door frame. We didn't use them and the fence has been secure because the width adjustment screws apply enough pressure by themselves to hold the fence in place. Be sure to measure the door and get an extension if it is needed. A 4" extension comes with. There is also a minimum door width and in our case we just barely made it. The fence is designed to fit in the portion of the door frame that is just outside the door when the door is closed. This allows you to close the door with the fence in place. BUT, you have to be sure that the doorknob will not hit the fence and prevent the door from closing. Of course, if you are going to leave the door open all the time, this is not a problem. The people gate has a handle that lifts to move a catch back from engaging the fixed portion of the fence. This catch must be adjusted so that it is closed when the handle is down and open when up. Adjustment is by tightening the upper opposite fence adjustment screw so that the fence squeezes towards the fixed portion of the fence. Not sophisticated, but simple and effective.
