Review: Amazing budget SSD, reliable after 3+ continuous years of use. - I got this drive after my main 128GB SSD started failing, had to get a budget option and my buddy recommended this brand to me. He's been buying from them for 4 years now (2 nvmes and a few ssds) and is very happy with them, like to boast their speeds in our discord. Decided to get this as a replacement. Shipping was quicker then expected, but desertcart has a thing for over-calculating shipping times, at least on my end. Went straight to installing it into my PC. Preforms great after nearly a month of using, already threw The Division 2, Apex Legends, Rust, and a few others on it. It runs perfectly. The first CrystalDiskMark (orange backround) was taken on 2020-Aug-14, after I got Windows 10 Pro installed/fully updated. Great reads, great writes. The second CrystalDiskMark (black backround) was taken as of writing this review on 2020-Sep-4. Nothing was running but a single Firefox tab where I am currently writing this review. Third CrystalDiskMark (white background) was taken before editing this review on 2023-Oct-9 Rebooting the PC yields a roughly 40 second boot time, from clicking restart to logging into Windows. Your experience may vary. Overall, I can highly recommend this drive, or any of Silicon Power's other drives for those who need a cheap yet reliable SSD. I was on a very tight budget when I got this and I am very satisfied with the results. Edit 2023-Oct-9: The drive is still going strong as my main drive. I accidentally ripped off the plastic L that the SATA data pins are supported by (thank you locking SATA cable connectors, very cool) but I just carefully shoved them back into the cable and secured it with a copious amount of electrical tape, and it's been working fine like that for around 2 years. I've uploaded a new CrystalDiskMark screenshot to compare with other results.
Review: Worked far better than expected - First of all, I have owned and operated a computer business for over 20 years, so I have seen the good and the bad, and, probably just like the rest of you, I read the reviews of items before I buy them. For me as a business owner, I have to be careful what we buy for and sell to our customers, and this drive was just such item we ordered for a customer that needed a new hard drive as theirs had crashed. I ordered it one day and it arrived the following day. Packaging was nothing special and was what was to be expected. Going from a traditional, mechanical drive to an SSD was already a given that it was going to be an improvement, but what we did not expect was just how much of an improvement it would have been for this system. Keep in mind, the system itself was nothing special, decent processor and 8GB of memory. We installed this drive fairly quickly, used a flash drive to install Windows 10 on the system and the installation was rather quick, which caused us a little hesitation at first thinking that something went wrong since most times installation takes considerably longer, but this was done in roughly 10 minutes, if not less? We let things run as they should and the installation was perfect, however, what truly impressed us was the boot time of the system from cold start to full on Windows ready, which was roughly 10 seconds! We thought that might be a fluke, so we shut it down and restarted it from cold start, and the results were the same. Now, as a comparison, we used a similar sized traditional hard drive and performed the same installation on the same computer so that there was no room for error or saying that system A has this processor and system B had this much more memory. Installation took roughly 24 minutes on the traditional drive and boot time was about a minute and a half before you could do anything without the little circle basically telling you to wait. Let me say this, I could care less what the reviews others may provide here are, perhaps they got a bad drive, which happens, or something else happened, I do not know, but, when we see install times cut down to less than half the time and a 10 second boot time, that is impressive, period. Will this drive be perfect for EVERY installation and provide the same results EVERY time? Of course not, conditions vary, experience and skill level of the installer will vary from person to person, and if there is one thing that we have come to realize over the years in this business is that people are far more willing to blame a device than their own user error because that is far easier to explain. If we are at fault and did something that would cause an issue, we own up to it, and yes, we know that devices can fail during installation or you get a bad batch or device, it happens. But, for some people, before blaming the device for a failure, consider looking at the conditions before blaming the device, as there might be a good chance that the failure was due to user error before device error. Would we recommend this drive to others? Absolutely. Will we continue to use and install these drives in other systems? Absolutely. Are these the "magic sauce" that is going to put your system over the top and make everything perfect? No, but these drives will do the job and make you happy you bought them!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is tbw for s55 ?? hopefully i can get the answer from the manufacturer**
A: @Carson - to answer your question, the OP was asking what the TBW for the S55 series of drives from Silicon Power is.

First some preliminary info:
Unfortunately, the question was probably asked incorrectly, at least the vendor appears to believe so as the vendor provided the info for the A55 series. The S55 series is in sizes 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB. The A55 series is in sizes (in GB) of 128, 256, 512 (and in TB) 1, 2, 4, 8, 16TB.

All things being equal, they are relatively the same in performance specifications (S55 and A55 of nearly same sizes). However, the S55 series is pretty much defunct by now, though you can still find them available.

Now, on to answer your question:

TBW stands for Total Bytes Written. It is the standard of measure for how long the SSD drive will last, or more correctly, how long you can still write to it. In layman's terms, SSD drives can only have data written to them so many times (in actuality it is the "erase" function which clears a block of space on the drive that this really relates to) and so they in a sense "get used up" after a period of time. All in all it boils down to the old MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) that regular magnetic hard drives (HDDs) are measured against.

TBW is generally measured in Terabytes (unless otherwise stated) so as an example, if you have a 512GB (Gigabyte) SSD drive that has a TBW of 250 it means that you can write up to 250 Terabytes of data on the drive before you can no longer write to it. In this example, that means you could completely write to the entire drive (and erase/overwrite it) 500 times (512GB being half a Terabyte relatively).

Once you have reached the TBW of the drive, you could no longer write to it, though you can continue to read the existing data on it for as long as the drive works "electronically".

Hope that answers your question as well as possible.

**Q: Does it have power failure protection?**
A: does it matter? the purpose of power loss protection is to write data from the dram cache to nand (flash) in the event of power loss. If an SSD does not have dram cache (such as this), there are no writes to in dram to protect. does that necessarily mean a drive is good or will survive a power loss? depends on firmware-if done correctly, yes. dram is much faster, so for high end drives, dram is almost a necessity. some of them with dram to hit high performance numbers do not have power loss capacitors...if you're looking for an application or use case that needs both the performance of dram caching and power loss protection of that dram cache, you likely already know enough to know the answer. if you don't have one of those use cases, power loss protection is really a moot point. This is not a drive someone would use for a ZFS ZIL, or a virtual machine swap file datastore, or big SQL server temp db..

**Q: Is this a good boot drive?**
A: I used to own a comp company..still build several high end rigs a year and enequivacly can say these are excellent "not " drives.

Very stable through all functions esp here in Hawaii with sometime spotty power supply.

Rgds and aloha

Tim

**Q: Anyone else have problems with this drive not registering on userbenchmark?**
A: I have not had any issues at all with this drive. I just recently installed it on my pc and it works perfectly

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent performance for the price
*by B***Y on September 19, 2024*

The SP 512GB SSD A55 has been a fantastic upgrade to my system! With 3D NAND technology and SLC cache performance boost, this SSD has significantly improved my computer's boot times and overall responsiveness. Programs load quickly, and file transfers are super fast compared to my old hard drive. Installation was easy—thanks to the SATA III 2.5" format, it fit perfectly into my laptop without any issues. The 7mm slim profile is a nice bonus for compatibility with thinner laptops. Plus, with 512GB of storage, there's plenty of space for my OS, applications, and a good chunk of games or media files. For the price, the performance is top-notch, making this SSD an excellent value. Whether you're upgrading an old system or looking for additional storage, I highly recommend the SP A55 SSD. It’s reliable, fast, and gives a noticeable boost in performance!
