Seem to prevent spills, they are just the right thickness and we use them often. My kids use them more than not. Probably because they don't like doing dishes. (Which isn't that why we buy them anyways ;-) They even hold up decent to a pizza cutter and even a knife when slicing a fruit. Sometimes they stick together but overall they are very versatile. Also appreciate the colored swirl versus the plain ones locally that cost more.
