It warms up food more quickly and keeps it from splattering everywhere. It's really convenient that it sticks to the top of the microwave and doesn't take up any extra space. We leave it in the microwave any time we are done using it. The silicone sponge is an added bonus. I really like it and prefer it over the other sponges we have used in the past.
