**Q: Does this lock, so that you don’t prick yourself by mistake?**
A: The black element is mounted on a spring, So the piercer is not apparent when not used, but it you press in an egg (or anything else) on the black element, it moves back and the piercing of the egg occurs. There is no lock as such.

Yes, it's a good egg piercer. Well made. Doesn't damage your eggs like some cheaper models but you pay for this priviledge. On saying that I am pleased I got this as it does the job well!

Having bought an egg cooker which came with a spike on the underside of the water measurer which turned out to be completely incapable of piercing the shell of an egg, this item came to my rescue. It's a well though-out spring-loaded design, so you leave it on the worktop and press the egg down onto it, which releases a proper metal spike. The spike is covered when not in use for safety.
