We use both regular AAA batteries as well as rechargeable and they both last a long time. Each train takes only ONE battery when every other set we’ve had takes two so that’s an extra bonus. Our kids range in age from 2-10 and all of them enjoy playing together. We will need another set now that the baby is interested and doesn’t have his own train. They move by themselves forward and backwards (with battery), they run out of battery quickly however. The engine part is plastic with a plastic driver, the piece that opens to put the driver in falls off easily but snaps back in mostly easily. The train cars that the engine can pull are wooden and cute. We don't use the other road block parts but they are nice.
