## Description

desertcart.com : Seed Needs Chinese Lantern Seeds for Planting (Physalis Alkekengi) Heirloom & Open Pollinated Orange Ornamental Husk Cherries - Annuals to Plant an Outdoor Garden (1 Pack) : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Review: Wanted Childhood Memories - I have not had these since childhood, so had been looking for plants for a couple years, but no garden center had them. This year I bought the seeds. I live in New England and started growing the seeds indoors. The first batch I planted, no seeds came up after 14 days. I tried a second batch and realized the seeds need to be dropped on the surface and not covered (they might be triggered to germinate by light). This time, every seed sprouted. Not all sprouts matured, because the seed cover stayed on some sprouts. I have moved them outside and now I am waiting for the end of the summer! I expect, many of the one star reviews did the same thing I initially did and covered the planted seeds, because once I put the seeds on the surface, there was close to 100% that germinated.
Review: Quality seeds. Geminated well - It comes in real seed package as the some seeds I bought on desertcart came in none descriptive non-labeled brown envelops. Most importantly the seeds germinated well, and the small plants are very healthy. They are high quality seeds. However, Chinese lantern is not easy seed to germinate. You need experience and care required for this type of seeds. You need a clay pot, garden soil, softest pot soil (goes on the top layer), and a plastic bottle water sprayer. All of them are from Walmart. After the soil is well watered, put finger pinch of seeds, then finger pinch of the pot soil to cover, about 1/8 inch deep. Put it outside, you need good sun light. Cover it with clear glass plate (also from Walmart) to protect from birds, and heavy rain. Water everyday with water sprayer. It took me about 5 weeks to germinate. At a certain point you no longer use the glass plate. The weather was cold in my area. When weather is ideal it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to germinate. When the plant becomes about 1 inch tall, I bury the whole pot in the garden and let the nature takes care. After 2 or 3 year it spreads all over the place. The dried lanterns last 3 to 4 years. The orange color gradually fade and the lanterns crumble.

## Features

- Unique Appearance: Chinese Lanterns, also known as winter cherry or bladder cherry, are grown for their vibrant, papery, bright orange husks that encase a small, edible berry, resembling tiny lanterns.
- Ornamental Value: A member of the nightshade family, this perennial is prized in gardens and dried arrangements for its striking husks, which turn from green to orange as they mature in late summer to fall.
- Growth Habits: The plant reaches 1-2 feet in height, spreading via rhizomes, and prefers full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil, though it can become invasive if not managed.
- Edibility and Caution: While the ripe berries inside the husks are edible and tart, offering a mild tomato-like flavor, the unripe fruit and other plant parts are toxic due to solanine content.
- Quality: All Chinese Lantern seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
- Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
- Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.5" wide by 5" tall.
- Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
- Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
- Freshness: All Chinese Lantern seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!

### ⭐ Nothing grew
*by D***D on April 28, 2026*

I purchased these seeds a couple months ago, tried twice but they never started to grow. I start all my vegetable seeds every year , so I know what I’m doing but these seeds were all dead. So find another seller and have better luck! Total waste of time and money! I’d give it zero stars but it wouldn’t let me
