A: It is hard and also comes with a soft clear plastic protector to use on it while traveling to protect from scuffing.

A: I have flown with it, they did great except I did reinforce the handles into the baggage because I was afraid that the handles were a little fragile because I knew it would get thrown around but they have held up great
