## Description

As an Economic Hit Man (EHM), John Perkins helped further American imperial interests in countries such as Ecuador, Panama, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. As Chief Economist for the international consulting firm Chas. T. Main, he convinced underdeveloped countries to accept massive loans for infrastructure development and ensured that the projects were contracted to multinational corporations. The countries acquired enormous debt, and the US and international aid agencies were able to control their economies. He tried to write this book four times but was threatened or bribed each time to halt. The events of 9/11 - a direct result of the activities of EHMs in the 1970s - finally forced him to confront the role he played himself, and to reveal the truth to the rest of the world. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man has become a word-of-mouth bestseller in the US. It has been called the book that finally 'connects the dots, the book that best explains what is really going on in the world'.

Review: A very compelling read. - I'll keep this short for now as I am just stating very briefly what I think, but I will edit this into a full review at a later date. This very is as stated, very compelling. It is in equal parts deeply saddening and inspiring. It is a little light on in depth details of certain situations but strikes me as a compromise between the weighty details of historical events and the authors own impressions of them from his very particular standpoint. There are other books which delve a lot deeper than this one; though I will say that most of them have been written since and probably in response to this one. It does seem as though the subject matter of the book might be a little 'dumbed down' for (forgive me) an American audience. Not that I am in any way inferring that 'Americans' would be any less capable of reading such a book, but that the view of an average 'American' on politics or world affairs may be ever so slightly to the right of ours in the UK and as such, they as an audience be a little less receptive or sympathetic to some of the views presented in this book. Never the less, I would say that this book was a very good starting for anyone who wanted to get a grapple on why things are the way they are in the world today. I would suggest it as an absolute must read for anyone who feels that the state of the world today is not quite as we all would wish. As I say, I will tidy this review up and improve upon it at a later date.
Review: Unbelievable Nonsense - I think not!! - I'm not quite sure what to think of this book. Why? I recently read a book titled 'Great Controversy' by White. It was written about a hundred years before John Perkins wrote this book. Now, the two books are worlds apart, until you come towards the end of White's book, (and you sure have to hang in there and read the whole book), then all of a sudden, Perkins starts to make sense. John Perkins does well in this book! It's more of an overview ... an itroduction to EHM's. If you first read White and then Perkins, you have to admit that perkins hits the nail on the head - or was it White?. But just on it's own this book is a brilliant read. I like it and unless you are 'one of them' you will enjoy it too.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Enlightening

An incredible read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm not American so a lot of the concepts in this book were new to me and it served its purposes for beginners (that's not to say that its a book which only beginners can enjoy). John makes the link between his employment with the Ministry of Defence and America's new spin on global imperialism, which are a lot more linked than I realised. I also like the fact that he admits he himself was propagating the problem and is at least honest about some of the bad things he did towards this end (probably not all though, eh?)
