My suggestion is to put them in a bucket and fill with water if your worried about fire ...What we used to do in a cabinet shop is hang them up like a wet towel on a clothes line and let them dry out to keep them from being a fire hazard ...then throw them away after they are dry. It depends on the temperature and proximity to heat. I store used rags w linseed (along with other solvents) in this metal container for weeks. An alternative way to store rags soaked w linseed (since it's fumes aren't toxic) is to just hang them on a line or lay them flat (not crumpled) on a counter. it's my understanding that the danger is when the fumes build up and it's hot. I use solvents so I use the storage can to contain and reduce fumes that I breathe. **Q: Will it be safe to use the can outside? Does the powder-coat prevent rust from the rain, etc.?** A: You know, I was at the Costco Gas Station the other day. I saw that they had the same can siting outside. It showed some ware, but not much. I think you wont have to worry about rust too much.
