You don't need any filters. It has a metal filter in it. You should ideally use a rough grind coffee but any kind of ground coffee will do. However, the threaded end cap on the plunger is made of plastic, and I don't really want plastic coming into contact with hot liquid that I intend to drink. I'm trying to reduce microplastics and chemicals from cookware leaching into my diet. The older model, also made by Bodum, had an all metal filter assembly, including the threaded end cap. I don't like this design change, but I couldn't find an all metal version. The lid of both the old and new version is also plastic, but that doesn't come into contact with the hot liquid, so that's fine, while also providing necessary insulation so you don't burn your hand. It's the plastic threaded end cap on the plunger that submerges into the coffee that I object to, and so loses a star for that reason.
