Rohrer & Klingner Salix Iron Gallus Ink is a 50ml glass bottle of historically inspired iron gall ink, crafted in Germany. It features a balanced formula for optimal flow, natural ingredients, and an airtight seal to prevent flaking. The ink darkens over time, delivering a unique, deep black finish favored by calligraphy enthusiasts and professionals alike.

## Description

Rohrer & Klingner, Salix iron gallial ink. The manufacture in the Middle Ages was made of iron (II) sulfate (ferrous vitriol), bile apples or vegetable galls, water and gum arabic. Dried bile apples are crushed and cooked, creating gallic acid (from tannins). Iron sulfate and gum arabic are added to it. Arabic rubber prevents flakes, improves writing and acts as a binder. Thanks to the airtight seal, the ink can be preserved and better protected against flakes. The finished ink is created on the paper by oxidation of the bivalent iron with oxygen from the air to trivalent iron, which enters a deep black complex compound with gallic acid. It takes about a day. To make the ink more visible when writing, a dye such as methyl blue is added, which later fades. This was partially used as a styling element for contract inks. The inks have written blue black and become darker or darker after drying.

**Q: I've heard that this typeof ink (iron gall) is harden to clean out of pens, what precautions should I take?**
A: This ink is more of a hybrid iron gall. I've never had trouble cleaning it but I would not leave it in a pen that's not being used regularly for too long. I left it too long in a twsbi vac 700 and after I cleaned it the filling system wasn't smooth anymore so I just put more silicone grease on the stopper and it was fine again.
