HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. It refers to lighting technology that relies on an electrical charge to ignite xenon gas contained in a sealed bulb. One great advantage of HID lighting is that it doesn't have a filament but instead creates light by igniting an arc between two electrodes. HID Xenon Light BallastHID lights get their name from the intense white light produced by the electrical discharge. Halogen bulbs, which have a filament, have a lifespan of about 250 hours (1 year). HID bulbs are gas filled capsules that are rated for a life of 2500-8000 hours (3 to 5 years). Another fact is that they use only 35watts of electricity, while stock Halogen Bulbs require 55 watts, thus drawing less power than a vehicle's factory system.
