Instead these bells are empty and are supposed to hit the ball next to the bell. I guess it might work - if a gale came through our neighborhood. As it is, these make little to no noise and I can't even hear them sitting right next to them on my porch. They do look fairly nice, but I care far more for how they sound. Hung under our breezeway, they really never chimed like I thought they would. BUT --The worst part: they are completely rusted. COMPLETELY. The exterior of the bells can be cleaned somewhat, but the inside of the bells are entirely covered with rust.I have at least 8 other wind chimes in my back yard and patio area; most of these are at least 5 years old (some are twice that age) and still look and sound great.
