The weight feels well held once the pin is fully inserted and I've not had any worries about part of it falling on me even with overhead exercises. I considered the other version of adjustable dumbbells for which the weight is adjusted by turning a dial at either end - but opted for these as it appears there is less to go wrong with this mechanism in the future. They're not cheap so I'm hoping they will be durable. A few minor negatives - the pin can be fiddly to insert unless the plates are lined up properly. Also the label on the dumbbells states that the handle weighs 5 lbs. It felt a bit light for that - and at least on my kitchen scales it weighs exactly 4 lbs...
