Its basic in that all you do is chip away at a plaster block and carefully remove the individual pieces but they clean up well, the book does a decent enough job at showing you what each one is and allows you to learn a little in the process. For the money,I think they make a good treat, stocking filler or small present for any child that even has a passing interest in the world of fossils (or other kits like gemstones etc.). We actually bought another, larger kit at another time after this one to excavate and add to the collection, went down just as well as this kit.
