They claim to be 100% but what they are is leather grindings, put together with a poly based glue. Then the top may or may not be actual top grain leather. I compete against these daily. I guarantee a hand made belt from a local shop will out perform these. Expect to get three months wear out of these. And regarding the animal, typically cow, but since the belt is leather grindings it could be anything. Even paper is ground up in with it. **Q: How do you size belts?** A: go up 2 sizes or 4 inches.
