Then I got away from it because I didn't have any good places to shoot. I enjoyed precision target shooting, became familiar with several types of guns from shotguns to antique western revolvers and several types of semi-automatic pistols. But now that I am aware of becoming a prime target for a home invasion, I sold off my "fun gun s" and have put together a small number of handguns for training, for home defense an d for self defense away from the home. I obtained a Concealed Carry permit which actually was needed in my present home state just to take my guns to and from the shooting range until they recently changed the law. So I recently decided I had a great carry gun for self defense (after considerable training and practice) and I had a very powerful semi-automatic for home defense. But I decided I needed a less powerful but more effective gun for home defense. I do not want to injure any neighbors by shooting a bullet that will travel for many blocks through houses. I decided the time had come to get a .45 ACP. Doing much reading on the subject, it looked like the 1911 pistol was the best. 1911 was the year it was first introduced to use by the US Army. Current models are very similar to the original design but there have been some improvements in the past 100 years. I bought this book for an idea of the significance of certain aspects of the evolution of the gun.Even though it is the Kindle version, this book is very good at showing the evolution of the design. But I was dissapointed in the poor organization. The book seems to be made up of several magazine articles stuck together. Still it was adequate for me to determine I needed to buy one of these guns. This gun is more complex in the mechanical sense than any gun I have had yet. I still rely on the photos in the owner's handbook that came with the gun for normal maintainance. This book gives a good overview. I am still looking for a more complete book set up for general reference on the 1911 semi-automatic. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well worth the time and money *by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2019* I'm kinda new to the 1911 having received a GSG 1911 in .22LR for my 52nd birthday last fall. (The GSG is a great gun to try to see if the 1911 frame is for you, cheap to buy and cheap to feed. Two inch groups with a scope and careful ammo selection at 25 yards too.) It was interesting to learn about the competition aspects as well as a review on many of the outstanding models available. I first read the handgun articles in Gun Digest when I get a new addition. This is like a full year of the best parts in one shot! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well worth it *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2007* I was quite happy with this book, it is a good collection of a lot of 1911 information. It does have a 'jack of all trades' feeling to it but for someone new to the 1911 it has a lot of good information. I think most of the people unhappy with it are expecting it to be more than what it is. You won't find one book on the 1911 that has everything in it. It is impossible for one book to collect every fact, variant, the history and all modifications for a pistol that is a hundred years old. But this book does give a good overview of a lot of information pertaining to the 1911 and variant there off.
