There are all kinds of smiling people walking on the street with Chinese lanterns hanging overhead.  They are celebrating the Chinese New Year, a “holiday [that] happens in January or February.”  On one page you can see a diagram of a Chinese calendar.  Every year represents a different animal, one of twelve different ones.  In the springtime of each new year it “is a time to see family.”  People also light candles and “honor the gods they believe in.”  You can see several rows of candles with many, many people reaching in to light them.During Chinese New Year, families get together and eat all kinds of foods.  Yum!  Some of them “eat oranges too” and you can see a boy holding two of them in his hands.  In the dark you can see Chinese lanterns glowing.  They are red, but do you know why?  It’s because “this color means good luck!”  In this book you’ll also learn about dance, lucky dragons, what children receive as gifts during the holiday, and what people celebrate.  Do you celebrate Chinese New Year in your house?  If not, you can join the families in this book as they celebrate!This is a basic nonfiction book that will introduce young readers to the Chinese New Year.  This large print nonfiction book is prefaced by a table of contents that will set the stage for future nonfiction texts. There are numerous pictures of people celebrating as well as those of the Chinese calendar and people holding a large dragon aloft.  Each two-page spread has written text about the holiday on one side and a full-page, full color photograph on the opposite one.  The layout pops with color and is a high-interest topic young readers will love.
