A porous surface is not your friend. for you must fill all that surface with flux or say good bye to your crucible as your digging it out later from being trapped inside it. Although you must flux every crucible. this one takes very little. which also requires a lot less time cleaning flux that may have transferred along with your pour.so far the quality is durable and the size i think it just right. rather than man handling a 12k red hot crucible that feels like your lifting the sun directly out of a furnace and fearing if it breaks its gonna melt your legs off. thats even with using a NASA space suit to repel the heat. you have no business smelting anything 12 kilos of molten hot lava thats relying on pressed material to hold together unless you enjoy burn centers. In my mind this is the perfect size crucible to handle at close to 2000 F. My only wish would be a built in pour spout. but its small enough to easily have a nice controlled pour. without wishing you never would of attempted this much in a large crucible. The 'break in' instructions were extensive which I did not follow. The product sat for several weeks before i needed the crucible for some sign work. Worked just fine without the breakin.
