They're sturdy enough to get through hard-packed ground, but you have to take your time with them. I found that steady taps worked much better than trying to drive them in with hard swings. One thing to keep in mind: if you hit a rock and keep hammering away, they can start to bend a little. If that happens, try giving the spike a slight twist and then keep going.
