Review: Easier to use and cheaper and than the Intermatic - We needed to move our pool timer from a covered patio to an unprotected area. Our pool guy recommended that we stick with Intermatic because "that's what everybody has." However, the price of a weatherproof Intermatic was really high, and I do not like the clumsy and imprecise tabs. Needing pliers or a wrench to change the settings felt like living in the dark ages. Since we were doing a lot of rewiring, we had an electrician install the timer. Simply swapping out the timer seems like a DIY job. The digital interface allows us to exactly match the low-cost electricity times from our utility. I can set a different schedule for the weekends. Once the timer is set, there is one button to toggle the system on/off (like the Intermatic). After a couple of weeks our pool guy said, "I really like this new timer." I was concerned about heat. The timer is facing east on the block wall separating our neighbors with no overhead protection, so it gets quite a bit of direct sunlight and radiant heat through the wall. It's been over 110 degrees for 30 days in a row here, and the timer is still working fine. Like others have said, the tabs keeping the door closed are pretty stiff. Be sure to secure it very well to the wall since you'll be putting a lot of pressure on the housing every time you open it. I'm considering cutting off one of the tabs or modifying it in some other way to make the door easier to open.
Review: Arrived promptly and works great - This was very easy to install. Since this is for an outdoor application, I used liquid flexible conduit, water proof connectors/interfaces and outdoor wire. I used water-proof connectors throughout and redid the connection to the pool pump as that was shorting out whenever it rained heavily and wouldn't stop shorting to ground for a week or two. This started after the heavy rains during the remnants of a tropical storm in the fall of 2011 that caused flooding throughout our area and left a film of dirt on the bottom of our pool. This replaced a mechanical timer that no longer worked properly. I will rework it and use it for other applications if I can make it work again. The product was very easy to wire up. I am using it in 110 V mode. The power comes in and you connect the common and the hot wires to the appropriate terminals. Do the same out to the load using the load out terminals which for me is the pool pump. You then wire in a 3 way switch into the switch terminals. I just wired all the grounds together in the box. It would have been nice if they provided a ground terminal for all the connections but this is unnecessary. The common and hot wires establish the 110 V levels or 220 V levels if you were to run that type of load. There are cutouts for all the connectors where the wires come in. I just used a pocket knife to remove the appropriate sized cutout. I would have thought that the cutouts could have been made easier to remove but making sure it maintains waterproof properties is very important so I would prefer that they err on the side of maintaining waterproof properties. I am very happy with the programmability. Seven days and one on and one off event per day which is enough for my application. With the external switch all the functionality I need was there. The override can also can be done internally at the display but the external switch makes it super easy. I can't complain, you can pay alot more for similar functionality in a digital timer switch box. So this did exactly what I wanted it to do and I am very happy. So long as it lasts a long time I will continue to be happy. If I can edit this review later, I will let you know how it lasts over time. But so far, no complaints.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this unit have a battery backup so I wouldn't lose time set?**
A: Yes it does. I have had mine now for three years and I turn off the power for about 7 months out of the year, and I still have not lost the programming yet. The only thing I don't like about this unit is how the door latches. It is very secure but can be difficult to open.

**Q: What is the lease amount of time it can be set for like 15 on 5 off 15 on for one day every other day?**
A: According to the manual, it has 7 total programs. Each program has an on and off setting. If you set something for every day it only uses one program so you could set up to seven programs in a day, so for your example it would only take up two programs. The granularity of the settings are in minute increments. It also doesn't check if you set it up properly, at least to the best of my knowledge.

**Q: can you set this timer to run 3 times 3 hour each time in a 24hour period**
A: Thanks for your question. This timer can be programmed with up to 7 different programs (7 on settings / 7 off settings) per week. If you apply the same program to every day of the week, it only counts as one program so you still have 6 programmable spots left. You could set up 3 different programs with on and off periods for one day. Feel free to give us a call at 1-800-468-1502 if you want to discuss this further. Hope this helps! -Kari

**Q: Does anyone know is this suitable to use for a 30amp water heater and how many timer programmes per day can you use. Is it manual clock or digital**
A: A typical domestic water heater is 4500W for each element at 240V, but only one element is allowed to come on at a time. So that's 4500/240 = 18.75 amps. Even with a 10% or 20% margin, this Aube timer - rated at 30 amps - is more than sufficient. This item allows 7 programs. So you could have a different schedule of 1-off/1-on on 7 different days, or you could have 7 identical on-off cycles for all days. One of the beauties of this unit that distinguishes it from the others (including Intermatic digital timers) is that you can install an external SPST switch (a basic light switch will work fine) which overrides the unit and puts it into manual or switches it back into automatic. So, for example, I can use the switch to put the water heater into manual mode and leave it off when I go on vacation. Then, I leave instructions for my house-sitter to just throw the switch and put it back into automatic mode on her last visit so we have hot water when we get home from the airport.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Does Exactly What I Needed It To Do
*by S***R on May 13, 2021*

I am so happy with how this timer works. After putting in a mini-split air conditioning system and putting a smart timer on the big central air conditioning system, my biggest monthly peak-demand energy use would always come from the water heater. We never exceeded about 1.5 KWh during peak demand hours (3 PM to 8 PM) with one exception. Unavoidably at least once or more per month, someone would take a shower or bath during the peak energy demand hours. That one bath or shower alone would cost over $50 or more by raising the months peak energy use during those peak-demand hours. That's where this timer comes in. This timer attaches to our water heater and is set to turn off water heating between 3 PM and 8 PM. Now our bathing hours have no affect on our peak demand energy usage. One of us took a shower last night at 5:00 and another at 6:00. There was plenty of hot water available to us from our 50 gallon hot water tank with the heating turned off by this timer. Then at just after 8:00, the hot water heater kicked on (via this timer) and re-heated the colder water in the tank during off-peak hours. Just last night alone I saved more in energy costs than what I paid for this timer. That's a full return on investment in less than the first twenty-four hours of use. I know that because I logged in to the Arizona Public Service website this morning, in to my personal account there. You can see there, exactly how much energy you used there for each hour of the twenty-four hour day. Between 5 PM and 8 PM yesterday, the peak demand never exceeded 1.5 KWh. But at 8:00 (we were asleep by then) a huge 4.5 KW spike happened in our energy use as timer kicked on and the colder water in the tank was re-heated during off-peak hours. This spike is typical when we use that much heated water. But now, It'll never happen again during peak demand hours. The affect on our lifestyle is no effect at all, except we save money. I hired an electrician to install this timer so that the job would look professionally done. The timer was very easy to program with a five-minute learning curve. We used the external switch feature so that my non-techie sweetheart could turn the timer on and off herself if necessary, without needing to open the box and figure out how to use the control buttons there if she ever needs to turn the timer on or off herself.
