Researched to the highest standards and written just as well with many great images throughout, this is a standout buy for the year and something I am very happy to have on my shelf.It would be great value at twice the price. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive with much new information *by X***H on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2016* Another excellent and well researched book from Ralph Pegram, detailing the designs of Reginald Mitchell for Supermarine. It covers those designs that actually flew, and also those that remained on paper. The book is well illustrated with photographs and three view drawings, enhanced by artists impressions of some of the more impressive unbuilt projects. There is an interesting contrast between the repetitive, somewhat uninspired designs for biplane flying boats and the advanced designs seen in the Schneider Trophy aircraft, and of course, the Spitfire. The author draws interesting comparisons between the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the somewhat neglected Gloster F5/34 prototype. He also, thankfully, dismisses some of the more persistent myths, such as the Spitfire being a private venture unsupported by the Air Ministry, and has interesting things to say about the possible influence of the elliptical winged Heinkel He 70. Also he rightly dismisses the unthinking assumption that the Spitfire was a 'development' of the Supermarine S6, although I would like to have seen more comment on the apparent design links (cantilever wing, wing shape, fuselage shape) to the S4 of 1926. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars A greater understanding of the works and sadly unfulfilled potential of a truly great Briton. *by C***F on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2016* Well researched and informative. It makes you sad to realise just how much more Mitchell would certainly have achieved if his life hadn't been so tragically cut short. He was truly inspirational and among a number of great aircraft designers particularly including Sidney Camm, Mitchell was the most far-seeing and head and shoulders above the rest.
