## Description

Product description Coffee was first introduced to the Malawi region by missionaries in the 1930s. They produced seeds that farmers could plant and the farmers would give the missionaries back the coffee parchment after it was processed. More than 3,500 people grow coffee within five separate areas in Mzuzu, Malawi, Africa. Every area has a Coffee Farmer Association (CFA) which was set up in 1999). It helps manage every aspect of their coffee business including the production of seedlings right through the entire processing period. Because the terrain is harsh, 70-80% of the coffee is grown on terraces. Organic fertilizer is used and chemicals are avoided unless there's a serious problem. Coffee trees must be three years old before they're allowed to produce a coffee crop and, even then, it's only half a crop. The trees will produce the coffee beans for five to ten years. Flowering starts anywhere from September to November and the harvesting season is between May and October. Mzuzu coffee is grown in areas of high elevation commencing at 1,000 meters above sea level. The Northern part of Malawi is where the climate is best for the coffee to grow. The coffee trees are planted in distinct contour lines to help stop the soil erosion problem, reduce the loss of soil and control the run-off. Small scale growers usually plant the Mzuzu coffee crops and also other species so they can have food to eat. Macadamia trees have recently become another addition to their crop planting business to help boost the people's income. The money made from the Mzuzu coffee crops is used to support the families because it pays for their necessities of life such as food and water. The main goals of the CFAs are: to increase the value and quality of the coffee through the processing of part of the coffee beans which are then packaged and sold, introducing pest management systems and minimizing costs by decreasing the reliance on expensive pesticides. Directions 1. Grind the Mzuzu Coffee beans.\n2. Brew the ground coffee using an automatic drip coffee maker or French Press.
