If you just walk the dog, probably fine. However, I let my dog play with other dogs (on leash); usually I let the leash go. (This way, there's no escaping as the dog knows it's not totally free). anyway, the metal part of the leash may hurt another dog, your own dog, or you. It's not a good idea to let this leash go.
