This set has backing material, and trim around the border, which I prefer, to avoid scratches on the table. The only thing to be aware of is that the bamboo slats are a little larger than 1/2". That took a little getting used to as my other bamboo placemats have slats that are closer to 1/4". My only complaint is that they arrive folded, and it takes bloody forever for them to flatten out on the table. Otherwise, I feel that they are high-quality and have the look of that. I've found that they wipe off with a damp cloth easily. Some people complained about food and liquids dripping through the weave onto the table. My table is finished in a protective coating, so this isn't a problem for me. If you have kids--which many of us do--you might be better off with cheap vinyl place mats for every day and using these for when you're serving guests. I personally love them and do not regret the purchase. They have just the eye appeal that I was wanting. Very rich.
