They sealed both units completely. the interior material is a stretchy waterproof nylon/plastic, and the exterior fabric on the top is similar to shallow terry cloth. The sides and bottom are a smooth fabric. The drawback is the encasement was a bit loose on my mattresses and boxspring. I have a 9-inch high mattress, and I bought the corresponding 9-inch model, but it was still a bit loose all the way around (about an extra inch on each side). Despite that it's stretchy fabric, it fits a bit loose.
