The size is perfect for dipping a calligraphy nib in for writing. I also have mixed watercolor and gouache in with water, to avoid "painting" onto my nib, and because they are leak-proof, my water-to-paint ratio stays where I need it. The functionality is great. The glass is thicker, so I am not afraid of breaking it either. They fit well into the ink well holder I currently have for when the ink is low.
