## Overview

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter is a compact, ultralight filtration straw that removes 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites, and microplastics down to 1 micron. Tested to EPA and NSF standards, it provides up to 4000 liters of safe drinking water, making it ideal for hiking, camping, travel, and emergency preparedness. Each purchase supports global water access initiatives, blending cutting-edge filtration with meaningful impact.

## Description

LifeStraw, the original ultralight backpacking and travel-friendly “straw” water filter, makes contaminated water safe to drink and helps to prevent most waterborne diseases by protecting against bacteria (like E.coli), parasites (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium), microplastics, and silt, sand, and cloudiness. Drink directly from lakes, rivers and streams or fill a container to use your LifeStraw on the go. The LifeStraw can provide up to 5 years of safe drinking water, with proper use and maintenance, and is rigorously tested to meet drinking water protocols established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NSF International/ANSI. Your purchase has impact. For every LifeStraw product purchased, a school child in need receives safe water for an entire school year.

Review: An amazing personal water filter - I read a lot of reviews and articles that suggested getting the lifestraw, and I'm glad I followed their advice. My only question at this point is should I get the steel version for our 2nd one, especially as it filters chemicals (i.e., pesticides, metals), has another separate filter, may be even more durable, and helps make the liquids taste better. One of the interesting things I found out about the lifestraw while researching is that it was originally developed to help people in developing nations with local water problems so that they could get clean water while a more permanent solution was found. Awesome - I can't think of a better use for it and would gladly support anyone engaged in such causes. Below are some other great reasons to get it: 1. It's one of the most compact water filters you can find that still does an amazing job 2. It's sturdy/durable 3. It does its job well with a backed up standard of filtering 99+% bacteria, protozoans - it boasts a filtration rate that rivals industrial filtration standards for our own tap water. 4. It does not impose any strange tastes to the water after filtering (although it also does not make crap tasting water more pleasurable to the palate - so be careful what water/liquid you use it on). 5. It filters 1000 liters before replacement is recommended - depending on the person, that's enough water for one person for about 500 days emergency supply. Or about 350 days of camping. It should be noted, though, that if it isn't kept clean and dry, it probably won't last that long. 6. To follow up this last point - if kept clean and dry, it purportedly lasts 5 years (given that you have filtered <1000 L) or indefinitely if you keep it in the bag it comes in without use. This is a very positive aspect of it for use with a first aid kit or an emergency water or food supply. 7. Even with the filter, the flow rate is more than adequate to quench your thirst without feeling like you're struggling to suck it through the straw. I should note, though, that when you first pull on the straw, it will take a couple seconds for the water to come up through unlike your run-of-the mill straw. Cons: Very few in this category but a couple to note nonetheless. 1. This is not meant for water storage - they do make a water bottle version, but no large containers come with or are associated with this. 2. This is not very convenient for drinking from a portable water reservoir or bladder (i.e., camelbak, osprey, etc). So, if you intend to use it camping or hiking, your best bet is to use it on streams and the like. If you have a hard time bending over to get to said water source, this probably isn't the filter for you. 3. Following up on this last point, if you need to filter large quantities (for your family camp site for cooking, etc) this is not what you need. I would recommend getting a gravity filter, iodine tablets, or something similar for that purpose. Overall, very happy with the lifestraw, especially for its price and versatility. It's very useful and brings peace of mind in case of an emergency.
Review: Life Saver - Great item to have. I picked up 2 of these during the pandemic for $10/ea. Well made and says it can clean alot of water. Tested one time and seemed to work. Well worth having around.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Odd question, but its on my mind. If i pee into a bowl, and use the filter on that, will it taste like water or pee?**
A: Salt and urea, along with various other substances your body is trying to eliminate, will remain in the filtered urine so it will still taste like pee (whatever that tastes like.) In a desperate survival situation, many people have resorted to drinking their urine. That is ok up to a point. As your dehydration increases, your urine will become increasingly concentrated (dark and even viscous.) It's best to drink urine early in your survival situation since it will be less concentrated and consequently less toxic. That way you are conserving what water you do have longer. Of course, most people will completely exhaust their water supply before they resort to drinking urine. However, drinking highly concentrated urine is probably worse than not drinking it at all. Also, urine is actually sterile inside your bladder but not as it flows through your urethra. Happy drinking!

**Q: I am a bit confused... Does the shelf life of 5 years begin after first use? Or 5 years even if unused? Does it have a manufactured date on it? If we don't use them do we need to replace them every 5 years?**
A: 5 years from manufacture date which is supposed to be printed on the packaging . Last ones I bought from Amazon were expired but the manufacture and expiration date had been removed from the packaging . I contacted lifestraw and according to the batch #,they mistakenly left, they were 7 years out of date . If you go to your local caming or sporting goods store you will see they clearly DO come with a manufacture, expiration date and batch # . Remember you get what you pay for and trying to save a few dollars purchasing from sellers that arent exactly honest and sold you a unuseable, expired product isnt a good deal in the end. If it doesnt have a date you can find on the packaging then its most likely been removed and either out of date or close to .

**Q: Can you use it with sea water the LifeStraw**
A: No, the Life Straw does not remove salt from ocean water. You can buy desalinators on Amazon for around $250- $300 that can make drinkable water from salt water. Unfortunately, Life Straws cannot remove salt or dangerous chemicals from contaminated water.

**Q: It says UP TO 1000 liters, since you're not measuring your water and it depends on how bad the water is, how do you know when it has reached its limt?**
A: Take a 1 liter jar, fill it with water, now draw out the water using the straw a mouthful at a time. Count how many mouthfuls you get from a liter of water. Multiply. that by 1,000. Men, women and children will have different figures.
