It really is magic. Alum is a salt rock crystal that is antiseptic and astringent. Therefore if you nick or cut yourself whilst shaving, alum cleans it and makes the skin contract to stop the blood flow. The consistency is a hard crystal, but when it comes into contact with water it enables you to place it on your face and glide it over where you have just shaved. It is also one of the active ingredients in many deodorants and you can use it highly effectively under armpits as well.I find the best way is to wet my face and under arms and then use the block without wetting it. The alum picks up the water on face and under arms and starts to work. I use it every day after shaving and it works perfectly.I do a 2 hour dance class twice a week which is high energy, and whilst I do sweat, I don't develop body odour. The alum neutralises the bacteria that causes the odour. That is something many sports deodorants would struggle with but the alum handles it perfectly.As it is a salt crystal, you need to make sure it doesn't sit in water because then it will just dissolve away. If you use it as I described and then give it a quick rinse followed by a dry with a towel then it will last for ages. I bought mine at the beginning of March and it is barely half way through now we are nearing the end of May. Buy alum and forget about modern alternatives.
