I've already given it a punishing ride in my garage, and nothing bad happened - to the chair. My only issue was getting the old one with the broken wheel mount off the chair. No amount of hammering would do it, and I was starting to damage the thing even with a rubber mallet. Eventually I carried the chair out to the garage and cut the old base off with a band saw. I think I could have done it with a hack saw. It would have taken a lot longer, but if you're struggling with the hammer, it might be worth a shot.
