So if you have 240 GPH it will kill the algae only but if you lower the GPH it will kill both the algae and parasites because the water flow is slower and is in contact with the UV light longer. I had the same problem so I called the tech people of my pump. They told me to put a plastic ball valve in the tubing coming from the return side of the pump (side that the water is going out of the pump to the aquarium) and turn it down to less than half the flow. (Two Little Fishies ATL5450W Ball Valve for Regulating Water Flow, 5/8-Inch) But by doing that you cut the filtering to you tank to much so what I did was to purchase a separate 160 MPH canister pump (Marineland C-Series Multi-Stage Canister Filter 160 GPH) and put the 6X on that and by the time the pump pushes through the 6X the water flow is slowed to about 110 GPH that is needed.
