It is much better. I was pleasantly surprised by his ability to briefly and cogently sum up major developments and consistently suggest connections which I had not recognized. I have taught military history for over 30 years and this book was both a pleasure to read and filled with insight. I would give it five stars except I think that level should be reserved for those books that merit essentially "Oscar" consideration. Il présente celle-ci non seulement au niveau stratégique et tactique, mais aussi technologique, philosophique, moral et sociologique, que ce soit sur terre ou sur mer.Vaste sujet traité à la façon d'un récit continu divisé en large chapitre. Difficile donc de retrouver une information dans le texte mais cela rend la lecture plus plaisante. Cette méthode renforce aussi l'idée d'une évolution continue en parallèle de la société et de la politique.Le premier chapitre traite de l’époque napoléonienne, de tout ce qu'elle a apportée, de tout ce qu'elle a coûtée et de son lègue.Le second chapitre poursuit jusqu'à la fin de la campagne d’Italie en 1859. Il s'attarde particulièrement sur l’évolution technologique et les conflits coloniaux.Le troisième chapitre parle de la guerre de sécession et de ses particularités. L'aspect social du conflit est traité, ainsi que l'utilisation intensive des chemins de fer.Le quatrième chapitre signe la fin de l'Empire de Napoléon III avec la guerre franco-prussienne. Il mets en évidence les manquements de l'armée française et le rôle de la « petite guerre »Le cinquième et dernier chapitre va jusqu'à la guerre russo-japonaise.
