It's one piece of brushed stainless steel formed to comprise the serrated blade and handle. It has no joins or plastic bits or rivets. Nothing to fall apart or trap germs. It's nicely balanced with the handle heavier than the blade. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as sharp as I expected but it does cut tomatoes without any problems. I think it might be due to the serrations being a bit large but having said that I think that would be beneficial for cutting meat or chicken if you want to.
