Best on the market... but still a pain. (UPDATED)

*by S***R on Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2018*

Review Updated on 1/30/2018 regarding newer filter material which corrects the 1 major flaw I wrote about, see below for new comments.I have had one of these filter for 6-7 years and am about to buy another. They do a good job of filtering out the fine particles that can cause cloudy water. I also have an expensive bead filter that does a lot of the work but without this filter I could never filter out the finer particles that appear during the summer in Florida, even with a big UV light. With this filter, and knowing to add "AlgaWay" at the start of an algae bloom, I can keep my pond clear throughout the year.I have also bought other Laguna products and have always been happy with their quality. BUT, all is not perfect. While I would recommend you buy this filter, do keep in mind it is a pain to clean. You will get your hands dirty with fish dodo each time you clean it. You will buy a pack of filters every six months (I use the aftermarket ones). You will eventually need to buy spare parts such as o-rings and the metal clamp that hold the lid down. All of these issues I just mentioned are part of any 'foam' filter, so I cannot blame Laguna for that, it is just the nature of the product.<original comment>The only thing I find as a design flaw is on this model is after cleaning the filters and putting the filters back into the bucket, quite often one of the bead balls will get stuck in the plastic tube where the filter holder rod inserts into and stops the lids from closing all the way. This requires you to pull everything back out and submerging your arm to the bottom of the bucket (through all the fish dodo) and move the bead ball(s) out of the way. The plastic tube that these balls get stuck into is about 3-4 inches in diameter and six inches tall. I have large hands and can barely squeeze my hand in the tube to remove the balls. If my hand get stuck in the tube sometimes the tube itself comes out which requires even more time to fix. My tip on how to avoid this is when putting the filters back into the bucket to lower the filters very slowly. If you put it in to fast it makes a current which pushes the bead ball into the tube. Also be careful to make sure the big o-ring is properly seated before clamping down the lid.<end original comment><new comment>Well my new filter looks just like the old filter from 6-7 years ago EXCEPT it is about 4-5 inches shorter. This smaller unit appears to be due to the fact they changed the filter media at the bottom of the filter bucket. My older filter had about 8-10 inches of plastic balls that were about an inch in diameter. The new filter came with a porous rock like material that only takes up 4-5 inches. This rock like material is also put into a mesh bag so you can easily remove the rocks to hose them off when cleaning the filter. More importantly, now that the plastic balls are gone, my primary flaw I complained about above is no longer an issue.<end new comment>My only other advice is when installing the tubing that supplies water in/out to the filter is make sure everything is aligned perfectly. Each time you clean the filter you must unattach these lines with the "Click-Fit Fast Coupling" (which are great). When putting them back on if they are not properly aligned and the proper length you will get a drip. Oh yeah, buy some food grade o-ring grease and a spare pack of the small o-rings and always have them on hand. They work really well but eventually will wear out. If you do not have spares you will have a big leak until you can have Amazon send you more.Best of Luck!

Water looked better. Fish liked it

*by O***L on Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2016*

Works well. I do have to open it up to clean it. I don't think it gets clean enough when I just move the levers up and down. Has been in the pond several months. Just took it out of the pond before the before the temp outside got too low. Sometimes I move it to another pond I have for a while to get the algae killed and filtered out. I noticed a big difference before and after using the light and filter. My ponds are about 10 years old and I did not have to change the water as much with this product. Saved time. Water looked better. Fish liked it.

    Very good!!!!

*by H***N on Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2016*

This is awesome! I bought it thinking it was the whole thing including the pump so I had to purchase a pump. This works so good! I have 2 red eared sliders in a 110 gallon stock tank/pond and I just had the little box pond filter that just couldn't keep it clear. I had my brother help me put it all together and by the next morning it was clear! I can see turtle booty all the way to the bottom. I don't think the turtles like it lol, it's harder for them to hide. This was a very, very good deal for the price it works very good! I watched several videos and the cleaning looks so easy.
