Review: Made hours of work turn into minutes - I kept this tiller on my wish list forever... but finally the warehouse had a used one at a price I found very hard to resist. Wish I had bought it sooner! It is really easy to handle. My kids laughed because it looked like I was vacuuming the flower beds :) It is close to the size if a vacuum and I can manage it with one hand, although 2 hands is better. It doesn't "take off", which was a concern of mine. I was careful near tree roots and I kept an eye out for rocks. But I have to say, it couldn't have handled better! Even at tree roots I could do the surface dirt and just not push down to dig in deep. I was able to go right up to the flower bed edge and right up to the plants. I didn't feel like I was in danger of cutting off a foot either :) Also has very nice safety features at the handle so that the kids can't just push a button and accidently turn it on. If this lasts one year, I would concider it worth every penny, and would go ahead and buy another! I have very hard, clay like dirt, and generally have to put a whole lot of muscle into turning the soil. The ardvark ate into it with absolutely no problem and turned hours of my straining effort into 45 minutes of me letting the ardvark do it's thing! I couldn't be more pleased! Love it. Gotta say, this may be my favorite desertcart purchase :) I'm a mom of 6, my youngest being 6 months and time savers are so wonderful. I really like things to look nice, but don't have time or energy like I used to :/ Ardvark made my yard look so nice, I just keep looking out the window and smiling :)
Review: Great little tiller - I bought the Sun Joe because I wanted a light tiller I could use on three raised beds used for vegetable gardening with a total area of 100 square feet. Each bed is surrounded by a 3 foot rabbit fence so double digging with a shovel would have been difficult. The tiller arrived mostly assembled, all I had to do was position the handle and tighten it, and then telescope the handle to the right length. The tiller is quite light, feeling lighter than it's advertised 10 pounds. I have three 4 x 8 raised beds. Each one I had added composted manure that I needed to till in. One bed had just straight dirt, the second one had some spring wheat growing in it, a couple of inches tall. The third had last year's crab grass thickly matted (and dead) and I knew that one would be tough. The tiller handled the first bed with just dirt and manure easily. I found it was easy to drag the tiller slowly backwards and it would dig in anywhere from 4 to six inches, depending on how much you wanted to work it. The second bed, with some spring wheat growing in it, was a little tougher because the 5-7 inch roots would get mulched and stuck around the tines. I stopped tilling twice, unplugging the unit to clear the roots and mud clinging to the tines. The third bed was an even tougher job, and I had to move along much more slowly, again having to turn the tiller off and unplug it to clear the tines of roots and matted crabgrass material getting stuck and wound around the tines. All told, however, the unit worked very well. I was able to till three beds in about 10-15 minutes. If I had to double dig those beds, it would have been 1.5 hours of tough shoveling. I think this unit is fairly reliable. I put my hand on the motor and it was only slightly warm after five minutes of tilling without stopping. It's generally heat that kills off a motor but if you use this motor in the coolest part of the day and take a break here and there every 5-10 minutes, the motor should last a long time. The power of this unit is just adequate for the job. Any more powerful, and a lot of dirt would have been knocked out of the beds. This one knocks a little dirt of the beds but not bad because tilling tends to throw soil around. I probably would not use this tiller if I was planning to create a 1,000 square foot garden by breaking up lawn sod. Definitely look for a a unit that's 8-10 amps or gas powered for that sort of job. However for tilling small beds of soil that haven't been heavily compressed this unit does the job. It's fairly good for raised bed gardens.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can it handle clay soil ?**
A: Yes, my garden has a lot of clay. It handles it easily. The only thing that stops it is small rocks which wedge in the rotor. The are easily freed by a quick hand twist. Had it through two seasons and no problems.

**Q: what is rpm? does it have a high and low speed? raised bed do not want to throw dirt out**
A: Hi Jamie,The TJ599E has just one speed, with a push button safety and trigger on/off switch. The RPM is a guesstimate of about 150 RPM. The "cowl flair" just above the tiller blades acts like a mud flap, so it doesn't throw dirt backward. And as you tilt the handle more horizontal the back flared area prevents the tillers from going deeper in the ground. It is well built, great for a small garden or raised bed. I felt comfortable enough with it's control to use it close to plastic sprinkler pipes in my raised beds. It was designed for residential tilling, not for commercial tilling clay or dry hard ground. Ivy or roots can wind around the blades causing you to stop and untangle them. The one noted negative I found was the strength you have to push the safety button with your palm before pulling the switch in. It is on the left side, so being left handed, it is not easy to push it in. OTOH, it is a safety switch, for safety. Hopefully it will loosen up with use.

**Q: is this good for tilling ground for the first time?**
A: Don’t buy this it’s junk. Plastic gears we’re stripped before it touched the ground.

**Q: what is the width of the tilled area**
A: It tills about a 6in width
