I was amazed to promptly get a response with suggestions for correcting the problem and asking for my address and purchase invoice. Following the advice the flashlight worked perfectly again. I wrote the mfg. to so advise him of that and they responded thanking me and told me that if the problem returned to let them know and they would send me a label to return the light or replacement. Max setting is properly bright and settings 3 and 4, I bought another one. It comes with replacement rings for the LED and the button mechanism and a replacement button, I have had no need of them yet, and lanyard is thick and able to be tightened well.
