You definitely don't want to keep dipping into the 5 lb tub with your hands. Water, other products ect can contaminate the tub and introduce bacteria into it and it can spoil. I scooped some out with a measuring cup into a smaller container to keep the larger bucket free of contamination. It will definitely last the maximum time that way.
