Review: What a beauty! - At the time of purchase, this was $203. I know the N100 CPU is not exactly a speed demon, but that's not the point. I have several mini PC's with something along the N100 line (N95, N97, N100, N150) and they're perfectly viable processors for day to day tasks like streaming video, web browsing, various productivity applications, and light gaming. Of course, the N100 is known for its power efficiency. With a TDP of only 6W, you could get 10 of these chugging along using the same combined power as a single incandescent light bulb. Of course, it does use more power when it steps beyond its base frequency, but if you're not taxing it, it's insanely efficient. And as long as you're not looking for a lot of CPU-intensive things like Suricata, they make great CPUs for custom router/firewall appliances. That's what I bought this for. One of my other N100 mini PC's is already running Proxmox with several containers for Pi-Hole, Home Assistant, Ubiquiti Network Server, and an intranet web server. And it's never really running more than about 2% CPU utilization, so it's plenty for your home network needs. The fact that it's fanless means that it's perfectly silent, and it can be incredibly compact since it doesn't have to worry about airflow. The exterior is metal to encourage heat dissipation and it feels great as a result. Really nice solid weight to it and only about as big as my hand. The edges on the top are a bit on the sharp side, partly owing to the heat dissipation pattern, but it's no big deal. Power adapter is 12V 3A USB-C. Unfortunately one of my only complaints revolves around this. The USB-C port for the power adapter and the USB-C data port are on the same side of the device, one in the middle and one in the corner. I assumed that the one in the corner was the power port since that's where power ports usually are, but nope! Note that they ARE labeled, they're just hard to read. I've installed OpnSense on this one, so here's the thing with that so that you can save some time -- the NICs are Realtek RTL8125's which are not supported natively in FreeBSD, so after installing the software and loading up the console menu, you won't see any interfaces. To get around this, you'll need to (temporarily) use a USB network adapter like this one (cheaper ones are out there, but this one is nice because it has a USB-C pass through and supports 2.5Gb). Plug it in, and plug into the network through that adapter. Reboot back into the console menu, select Assign Interfaces, and you'll see the adapter as probably "ue0". Assign that to WAN, leave LAN empty, set an IP address (or leave as DHCP as appropriate), and you should be good to go. Log in to that WAN IP from another machine on the network, install the latest updates, and then go to the Plugins menu and install the one called "os-realtek-re". Once that's installed, go back and reboot the box, remove the USB adapter, go into the console menu, and Assign Interfaces again. Now you should see "re0" and "re1". Assign them as you see fit, and you're all set! You can get N100 mini pc's for cheaper than this. But you'll end up with something cheap feeling and plasticky, probably with only one NIC or maybe dual 1Gb. Just the feel and the shape of this machine makes it worth the money compared to the others, but the dual 2.5Gb NICs and the fanless design makes it really great.
Review: Quality Mini PC for a Linux based router/firewall/PBX - I purchased a MeLE QuieterDL 4GB RAM, added a Silicon Power M.2 NVMe SSD. I chose 4GB RAM since that is more than enough for a Linux router/firewall/PBX project. After limited testing, I am pleased with the MeLE QuieterDL, a reasonable value at $146 USD + free shipping. Being fanless and 2x 2.5Gb NICs was the key selling point. Idle power is 7 Watts, (No video connection, disabled WiFi, eMMC and HD Audio in the BIOS) The 2.5Gb Realtek RTL8125 NICs do not have a registered MAC vendor ID, it would be nice to see "MeLE" as the vendor. Temperatures are reasonable, for example at idle with an ambient temperature of 23C: -- Adapter: ISA adapter Package id 0: +45.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) Core 0: +42.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) Core 1: +42.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) Core 2: +42.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) Core 3: +42.0 C (high = +105.0 C, crit = +105.0 C) -- I was somewhat surprised how the box is hardly warm, albeit no video or heavy CPU processing. Attached is a photo looking inside, note a bracket with a white "pad" pushes on the underside of the N100 forcing contact to the heat spreader. After limited testing, my only negatives so far: * The lack of a "buzzer" (there is a spot on the board, but not populated) * The 12VDC power adapter uses a Type-C connector instead of a barrel jack. This makes the power adapter unique, and could damage random USB-C devices if accidentally connected. All in all, the MeLE QuieterDL is worth consideration for your Linux router/firewall/PBX project.
